Supporting farmers through change

The Australian dairy industry is at a critical juncture, facing immediate and formidable challenges that demand urgent action and innovative solutions. Rising operational costs, dwindling profit margins, volatile milk prices, erratic weather patterns, staff shortages, shrinking export markets and changing consumer demands are among the pressing issues confronting dairy farmers today.

Over the next few decades, the intensifying impacts of climate change, including reduced rainfall and extreme weather events such as heatwaves, storms, bushfires, droughts, and floods, will further jeopardise the viability of dairy farming. These challenges threaten financial stability and profoundly impact the well-being and mental health of farmers, communities, and the welfare of millions of farmed animals.

According to a 2016 study by Dairy Australia, these adverse effects could cause dairy farmers to see a substantial decline in operating profits by 2040, ranging from 10 to 30%.

In response to these challenges, the dairy industry is witnessing a transformation with the emergence of technologies like precision fermentation. Major players like milk co-op Norco are investing in these innovations, paving the way for sustainable and environmentally friendly animal-free dairy products.

At Farm Transitions Australia (FTA), we understand the urgency of these issues. Our mission is clear: to support dairy farmers through this pivotal period by equipping them with the tools and resources needed to transition to new and sustainable enterprises, career change or more sustainable animal-free farming methods that require less land, water and resources.

The journey towards a sustainable future requires a paradigm shift. Dairy farming is no longer sustainable, necessitating a dignified and just exit strategy for farmers. FTA stands ready to champion this transition, rallying behind our farmers to ensure they have the support, guidance, and empowerment to navigate this transformative journey.
